French

The tutorial program in French is designed for students with superior academic credentials who have completed at least four years of high school French or the equivalent. Strong skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking are required to enter the program. During the four-year curriculum, students will perfect these skills in tutorials and participate in a study abroad program in France, which is required. Tutorials offer the student a comprehensive and systematic study of French and Francophone language, literature, and culture. In consultation with the Director of Studies, students are advised to complete work in an additional area of concentration such as another foreign language, a certificate in International Studies, Political Science, Business, Education or other options. Students in the French Honors Tutorial Program are encouraged to participate in language-related activities beyond the classroom, including French Club, tutoring students at the university level, or teaching French in the Athens public schools.

Program Description

In order to graduate, students must complete the following (unless otherwise advised):

1. 60 hours of studies in French above 213, including 12 tutorials in the following areas:
   Language: Phonetics, stylistics, advanced grammar and language teaching.
   Literature: Courses in French drama, prose and poetry from the 16th to the 20th centuries; courses in Francophone literature representing Sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb, the Caribbean and Quebec.
   Civilization and Culture: Studies in the history and culture of France and Francophone countries.
2. A ten week study abroad experience in France:
   An additional program in a Francophone country is highly recommended, including our department's program in Quebec. Programs are also offered at other universities through the Office of Education Abroad, located at 185 Lindley Hall. Qualified students may apply for internships in French-speaking countries.
3. An Oral Proficiency exam with a minimum level of Advanced low level:
   This exam will be administered by a certified oral proficiency tester during the student's third or fourth year in the program.
4. Completion of a thesis developed in consultation with a thesis director during the final year of study.

Evaluation

The tutor will evaluate the student's progress based on the weekly performance of the student and on papers submitted. A copy of the final written work done in the course must be submitted by the tutor to the Director of Studies for the student's file.

Requirements for Admission

Applicants must submit complete transcripts, including work done at other colleges or universities, with the HTC application. Students should be in the upper ten percent of their high school class. In addition, students should have at least 1300 combined SAT score or 30 ACT composite score. This requirement may be modified for particular majors or in unusual circumstances. Students must also submit two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from their foreign language teacher. The application deadline is December 1.
