UPDATE ON THE COMMON ROOM BUILDING PROJECT

To date, nine HTC alumni and friends have generously contributed to the HTC Building Fund which was established to support the building of a new Common Room onto the back of 35 Park Place. . Those funds remain unspent with the hpe that in the future this project will become a reality. Now we find that Ohio University, like other Ohio institutions, will experience budget cuts again. Like all units on campus, the Honors Tutorial College will experience a budget cut. For this reason, the Common Room building project has been delayed. The need is still apparent and we remain optimistic that someday we will see a new Common Room for our students.

The establishment of the Common Room in 2004 has truly strengthened our college. It provides a space for HTC students to use in between classes for reading, conversation, caffeine consumption, emailing and the occasional nap. Rather than only entering 35 Park Place once in a blue moon to pick up a form, HTC students now inhabit the building every day. The Common Room has helped to create that most prized of all human things--a community. We know that providing a larger space will help us to continue strengthening that community and allow us to host more events involving faculty tutors.

We have received approval from the university to build onto the back of 35 Park Place in order to provide a larger Common Room for our students, to give the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards much needed office space and to provide quarters for faculty fellows and visiting scholars. We would like to break ground in the spring of 2007.

The anticipated cost of this project is $350,000. Dean Fidler believes we need to raise at least half of this amount from HTC alumni and friends. Already we have received several gifts from alumni, but we need a groundswell of assistance from alumni and friends in order to make this happen.

Please consider a gift. Make your check payable to the Ohio University Foundation and earmark it for the HTC building project. Send all donations to:
