How To Apply
The application deadline for the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University is Dec. 1, which is earlier than the regular Ohio University application deadline for other undergraduate majors. All materials must be received by the Honors Tutorial College, Ohio Universtiy, 35 Park Place, Athens, OH 45701, no later than Dec. 1.
In order to be considered for admission into the Honors Tutorial College, please follow the directions below.
Carefully read all of the instructions for applying to HTC on the Ohio University admissions web site. Be sure to scroll down and read the paragraph about HTC application procedures.
Complete the standard Ohio University application. The application form for 2013-14 will be available in early fall 2012. Be sure to complete and submit the supplemental application for the Honors Tutorial College, which is included within the standard admissions application. The supplement consists of essays and other questions that change annually. We recommend you download a paper copy of the OU application and fill it out rather than submitting it online.
Some HTC programs require specific application material to be submitted along with the OU application and supplemental application as specified below. While it is possible to complete the OU application online, the College prefers that applicants download it and complete it in its paper form as mentioned above. That allows applicants to submit their application, supplement, and any required supporting materials by mail to the Honors Tutorial College, Ohio University, 35 Park Place, Athens, OH 45701.
Please remember: You must complete the supplement (found within the standard application) and submit it with your regular application in order to be considered for HTC admission.
If you are applying for the following HTC programs, additional supporting materials are required and must be submitted as part of your application packet:
- Biological Sciences: make sure that at least one of the letters of recommendation is from a science or math teacher.
- Business: one writing sample, preferably a research paper with a teacher’s comments.
- Communication Studies: one writing sample, preferably a research paper with teacher’s comments.
- Dance: a written essay on the significance of dance to your career objectives, two letters of recommendation -- one from a dance instructor and one from an academic teacher or counselor. In addition, submit a writing sample from one of your academic courses of study (e.g. history, English, literature, science).
- English: a copy of the best paper you have written for an English class.
- Film: a portfolio of creative work.
- Journalism: a portfolio consisting of at least one substantive writing sample and/or other creative journalistic work.
- Media Arts and Studies (audio, video, digital sequences only): a portfolio of creative work.
- Spanish: two letters of recommendation that speak to your knowledge and use of the language and culture. In addition, submit samples of graded papers in Spanish with at least two pages of writing with teacher comments.
- Studio Art: an electronic portfolio including 20+ images/actual works consisting of 5 drawings done from life, 5-10 objects (or images of objects) that display the applicant's ability to think and work conceptually and technically, and 5 images of the applicant's choice.
Request an official transcript from your high school. (We recognize that many high schools prefer to send official transcripts separate from the student's application. This is acceptable; please have your high school send your transcript directly to the Honors Tutorial College, Ohio University, 35 Park Place, Athens, OH 45701.)
Two letters of recommendation are required because of the extremely competitive nature of the Honors Tutorial College.
Request that all standardized test scores be sent to Ohio University. They may be submitted either on your official high school transcript or by the College Board.
Please note: While exceptional circumstances will be considered, the ideal HTC candidate should have minimum standardized test scores of 30 on the ACT and/or 1300 on the SAT. If you choose to take either standardized test more than once, we will consider only your highest scores.
HTC applicants should ideally be in the top 10 % of their high school graduating class.
In January, a final group of selected applicants will be invited to campus for an interview with the Director of Studies in their selected program(s). The interviews will determine final admission decisions. Learn more about interview day here.
Admission decisions will be made in February, and all applicants will be notified of their admission status on or before Feb. 28.
If you have any questions about the application process, please call the HTC office at (740) 593-2723 or e-mail honors.college@ohio.edu.
