Keeping Busy with Mary Brett

Helping others comes as second nature for Mary Brett Koplen, an HTC junior studying English. Between running the writers’ workshop for middle school students, peer networking at Hillel or gallivanting off to Israel, or delving into tutorial work, she is no stranger to the demanding but rewarding aspects of being an incredibly busy college student.

“I have my busy schedule with my jobs and different organizations, but my work is always something that I enjoy coming back to,” Koplen said.

For the writing workshop, Mary Brett and several other HTC students walk to Athens Middle School early on Friday mornings to teach the kids about creative writing, and sometimes, about themselves.

“The goal is to really try and shift the students from thinking about writing as a chore, to something they can do to really express themselves,” she said.

As an especially active student, Mary Brett represents the kind of positive and ambitious mindset so typical of Honors Tutorial College students.
