Common Room Builds Community

Thanks to the vision of former dean Ann Fidler and the generosity and support of HTC alumni, the Common Room, which officially opened last spring, has become a haven for students. Not only do HTCers meander in throughout the day to work and socialize, but they also attend brown bag lunches, lectures, ONCA informational sessions and other college-sponsored events.

Sophomore journalism major Nicolien Buholzer, frequents the space. “I like hanging out in the Common Room because I can get work done, but there’s a lot of people I can talk to too. If I hit a snag in my work, there’s people there who can help me,” she said.

Emily Atherton, a junior Communications Studies major and 5-day-a-week visitor of the Common Room, agrees.  “The atmosphere here is so good, work doesn’t seem that hard anymore,” she said. “It’s possible to do work and take breaks.”

Amenities offered in the space include daily coffee, tea, cookies and snacks. The College also subscribes to several magazines, which they offer to students to keep once the most recent month is over. Three computers with printing also are available for student use. And for times when academics don’t sound so appealing, students can play games like Bananagrams, Scrabble, chess and checkers.

Clearly, the addition is a significant upgrade in both size and quality from the former Common Room, and now serves to bolster the already noteworthy community of HTCers in our College.
