HONORS
What the Honors Tutorial has in common with other honors programs and colleges is the presence of the word "honors" in its name. The similarities end there. HTC is a tutorial college for honors-caliber students. The difference is not merely semantic but substantive and profound. A tutorial college provides self-motivated, creative, and disciplined students with unprecedented opportunities for intellectual development from the moment they arrive on campus as freshmen until the time they cross the stage at graduation as seniors.
TUTORIAL
The Honors Tutorial College is based on the centuries old tutorial system of undergraduate education developed at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. A tutorial consists of either one student and one professor or a very small group of students and a professor. Instruction is undertaken through dialogue rather than lecture. HTC students are required to take substantial portion of their academic work through tutorials although they also enroll every academic quarter in traditional courses. A tutorial-based education lays the foundation for success in graduate and professional school and career opportunities. It also sets the stage for life-long intellectual engagement.
COLLEGE
The Honors Tutorial College houses only 225 students in 29 programs of study. Its size and its resources allow for the maintenance of a community of young scholars who have an essential leadership role to play in the life of the larger university. They demonstrate both in and outside the classroom that being passionate about their own interests and the world around them matters deeply.
